The story of Santes Dwynwen is rooted much deeper, than St Valentine’s Day. It is embedded in Welsh folklore. Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen is one of the most romantic days in the Welsh calendar to this day.
Bound by fate’s intricate design,
Two souls yearn, an ache divine.
Separation’s lament, an endless tether,
Destined to be apart, entwined forever.
Brychan was the fifth century King of Breconshire (Brycheiniog) between approximately 419AD and 450AD. Dwynwen, one of Brychan’s many daughters and intended to marry a prince. Yet, Dwynwen fell in love with a local commoner, Maelon Dafodrill. Forbidden to marry the man she loved, Dwynwen fled to the forest and prayed for an answer to her troubles. And then a spirit visited Dwynwen and gave her a potion to forget Maelor. But it instead turned him to ice!
She then prayed to the spirits again, and a spirit offered her three wishes. Her first wish was for Maelor to be unfrozen. Dwynwen’s second for true love to always be protected in her name. And finally her third wish, that she would never again fall in love, nor marry. After this, Dwynwen became a nun, and has forever remained as the patron saint of lovers in Wales, protecting people from the same fate.
