September marks the end of summer
September, marking the transition from summer to autumn, has had a profound influence on many famous artists throughout history. This month, with its changing colours and light, has inspired a variety of works that capture the essence of this seasonal shift. One notable example is Vincent van Gogh, whose painting “The Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun” reflects the golden hues and warm, mellow light characteristic of September. The richness of the autumnal palette provided van Gogh with a vibrant spectrum to express his emotional intensity and connection to nature.
A month of reflection
Another of my favourite artists is Edward Hopper. His painting “Passing of Summer” captures a sense of quiet melancholy and the passage of time. In this work, Hopper uses his signature style of dramatic lighting and stark realism to depict a solitary figure. A figure often interpreted as embodying the introspective mood of late summer. Also, the image conveys a contemplative atmosphere. With its warm, fading light symbolising the end of a season and the onset of change. The empty space around the figure emphasises the isolation, typical of Hopper’s work. It seems to be reflecting the universal experience of transition and the subtle sadness that accompanies the end of summer.

A month of change
The soft, mellow light of autumn invites a contemplative mood, encouraging artists to capture the essence of change and the passage of time. This often leads to work that evokes a sense of tranquillity and contemplation, like ‘Gold Bathing’ by Jill Jones FRSA.
In essence, September’s unique blend of light, colour, and atmosphere has inspired artists to explore themes of change, reflection, and the passage of time, leaving a lasting impact on the world of art.
