When a Forgotten Biscuit Tin Revealed Sporting Treasures

One of the great joys of dealing in antiques, books and collectibles is that you never quite know what might be waiting to be discovered.

Recently, while sorting through a stack of vintage books at Y Segontiwm, we came across an old biscuit tin tucked away beneath the pile. Curious, we lifted the lid and found an unexpected treasure: a collection of original cigarette cards dating from the 1920s and 1930s.

Among them were beautifully preserved football cards featuring actual photographs of some of the sporting legends of the era, including the great Dixie Dean of Everton, whose remarkable goal-scoring record remains one of the most celebrated achievements in British football history. The cards are fascinating little snapshots of a bygone age, capturing not only famous players but also the design, printing and popular culture of the interwar years.

As someone more familiar with antique furniture, fine art and rare books, this discovery has opened up a new area of collecting that I’m keen to learn more about. Cigarette cards clearly inspire considerable enthusiasm among collectors, and I’d love to hear from anyone with knowledge or experience in this field.

We’re currently considering framing some of the most striking football cards to create attractive display pieces for resale through our gallery at Y Segontiwm in Caernarfon. Their combination of sporting history, graphic design and nostalgia makes them wonderful decorative objects in their own right.
