Exploring the richness of autumn

In the 20th century, autumn emerged as a potent theme for artists across various movements. They used the season’s distinct palette and symbolism to explore deeper emotional and existential themes. Painters like Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most significant artists of the 20^th century, embraced autumn’s rich, earthy tones. She would translate the natural beauty of falling leaves, barren trees, and fading landscapes into meditative compositions. O’Keeffe’s close-up depictions of dried leaves and flowers highlight the cycle of life and death, emphasising nature’s transience.

Marking the passage of time

As we hear from visitors to our gallery this October, autumn colours mark the passage of time. The change in season conjures up thoughts of cosy nights by the fire and kicking dried up leaves on a country walk. They have been particularly drawn to the work of one of our artists, Bill Kneale. His original painting ‘Autumn Colours’ with its loose brushwork, vibrant colours and form encapsulates all those emotions.

Abstract artists engage with the emotive possibilities

Abstract artists like Mark Rothko further engaged with the emotive possibilities of autumn, using colour fields in shades of ochre, rust, and brown to evoke moods of introspection and decay. Rothko’s abstract forms, though devoid of literal representations of the season, mirrored autumn’s themes of change and passage.

Across genres, autumn imagery in 20th-century art reflects a deep engagement with time, impermanence, and the cycles of nature, offering viewers a visual meditation on the human condition. And this takes us right up to present day with our Life: Full Colour artists who are currently exhibiting in our Contemporary Abstract Show here in Caernarfon. This vibrant, textured original painting by Jill Jones FRSA demonstrates the range of colour that marks the changing season. So many layers to look into. And it gives our visitors the opportunity to look and interpret their own feelings.

Our contemporary abstract and sculpture exhibition runs to the end of October in our art emporium, Celf Palas.
