Time and Tide by Jane Paice opens this week

Artist Jane Paice is showcasing her first solo exhibition at Life: Full Colour this April. Titled “Time and Tide,” the collection of oil and mixed media paintings explores the beauty and power of the sea that surrounds Jane’s home on the Isle of Anglesey.

The semi-abstract works offer bold and dramatic seascapes, with an underlying message about the fragility of human life. “Time and Tide” reflects Jane’s interpretation of the relentless energy and dynamic nature of the sea, which she juxtaposes with the fleeting passage of our time on earth and the echoes and footprints we leave behind.

Jane’s artwork is an exploration of her personal relationship with the sea, which has been a strong theme in her work since she began pursuing art full-time. She draws inspiration from her surroundings as the ocean is the place where she feels closest to loved ones who have passed away, including her eldest son. In her paintings, she strives to bridge the gap between her and her loved ones through her use of bold colours and marks.

Speaking about her journey to creating her first solo exhibition, Jane said: “Although art in its many forms has interested me for as long I can remember, a busy career and family life meant I was unable to devote myself to it in a serious way until 2016 when I started running oil painting courses from my studio. 

“However, several years ago, my elder son passed away following a long battle with ill health. In order to keep a promise to him and to myself, I chose to devote my working life entirely to my own painting. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of my son.”

While her artwork may begin with a dark or moody tone, Jane incorporates vibrant colours and life into her pieces to show that there is always hope, no matter how difficult life may seem. Additionally, her paintings are intentionally ambiguous, allowing viewers to interpret the work in more than one way.

The exhibition features more than 30 of Jane’s paintings and also includes Jane’s original poetry that explores the emotions and sentiment behind this body of work.

You can see the exhibition from 1 to 29 April at Life: Full Colour, 23-25 Hole in the Wall Street, Caernarfon. The gallery is open every Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm.
