Mysteries of the coastline uncovered by Jocelyn Roberts in latest exhibition

Prepare to embark on a fascinating journey along the beach as Conwy fine artist, Jocelyn Roberts, unveils her latest exhibition, “FOUND” at Life: Full Colour in Caernarfon. Art enthusiasts and beachcombers alike are invited to delve into the captivating realm of found objects through Jocelyn’s artwork.

  In “FOUND,” Jocelyn Roberts brings to light the beauty and intrigue of the natural wonders and everyday items left behind by the tides. The exhibition of more than 30 artworks features an eclectic array of subjects including sea glass and shells, forgotten toys, pill packets, and broken pottery. Visitors can also expect to see large scale waves, which you can imagine are responsible for weathering the items they wash onto the shore.

Jocelyn said, “I spend a lot of time on the beach in Caernarfon, which is tiny but there are always interesting treasures to find because of its location. The objects I’ve collected say something about the reasons we spend time on the beach, while giving us an opportunity to reflect on what we leave behind.”

In addition to oil paintings, visitors to the show can see Jocelyn’s own versions of hag stones and shells crafted in stone and bronze. Placed on plinths, these sculptures mirror the weight and texture of the originals and beckon visitors to interact with them.

“Sculpture provides an opportunity to bring a three-dimensional element to the experience,” explains Jocelyn. “I want people to touch and feel the pieces, picking the stones up as if they’re collecting pebbles on the beach.”  

Each artwork in the show is a testament to Jocelyn’s artistic prowess, skilfully unveiling the allure of the everyday. Her vibrant oil paintings capture the essence of these discovered artefacts, enticing viewers to immerse themselves in the coastal landscape.  

“I want to provoke thought and reflection on our profound relationship with the beach and the traces we leave behind. Each item, whether an ice-cream scoop, a Victorian clay pipe, or a pair of action figure legs, carries a story that challenges us to reconsider society’s evolution and our environmental impact. For me, art must have something to say.”  

“FOUND” promises to be a remarkable exhibition that celebrates the allure of found objects and showcases the coastal landscape’s inherent beauty. Art enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone captivated by the mysteries of the shoreline are encouraged to visit this showcase of creativity.

Jocelyn is a Welsh artist of 15 years who has studied fine art at Bangor University and more recently under the tuition and mentorship of James Eccleston.  She is currently the artist in residence at Life: Full Colour.

Her passion for painting the land, sea, and sky comes from living on the North Wales coast all her life, Jocelyn’s practice is formed from sketching and painting en plein air and also working up larger, more emotionally led pieces in her studio in Old Colwyn.

The projects and paintings of the coastline and landscapes have come from wanting to capture moments of weather and the elements quickly and accurately in acrylics or oils. These pieces evoke a sense of self in relation to place and the wild rhythms of the seasons.
