Jan Gardner RCA – Painting the Emotional Landscape

When we look at a painting by Jan Gardner, we are not simply looking at a landscape. We are looking at memory, emotion and experience translated into colour. Although her work often begins with observations gathered from the mountains, coastline and changing light of North Wales, the finished paintings move beyond representation into something altogether more personal. Places become repositories of feeling, where colour and mark-making evoke atmosphere rather than describe geography.

Liberating colour

In this respect, Jan Gardner occupies an important position within a lineage of British and European painters who believed that colour could express ideas beyond the visible world. The Fauves liberated colour from natural description, the Scottish Colourists embraced its emotional intensity, while the Impressionists explored the fleeting effects of light. Gardner draws from each of these traditions, yet her paintings remain unmistakably her own. Her surfaces are built through intuitive layers of transparent colour, delicate textures and expressive marks that invite contemplation rather than explanation.

Her lifelong fascination with colour is no accident. In 2007 she was awarded an Arts Council of Wales research grant to investigate the history and manufacture of artists’ pigments in Milan, Geneva and New York—research that continues to inform the richness and subtlety of her palette today. Rather than treating colour as decoration, Gardner understands it as a vehicle for memory, spirituality and emotional response.

Royal Cambrian Academy of Art

Equally significant is Jan’s long association with the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art. Elected as an Academician in 2015, she has become an important contributor to the Academy’s exhibitions and artistic life. Jan has major exhibitions there including her most recent one this July 2026. Founded in 1881, the Royal Cambrian Academy has long championed excellence in Welsh art. Gardner’s election places her within a distinguished tradition of artists whose work has helped define the visual culture of Wales.

What distinguishes Jan Gardner most is her refusal to separate technical mastery from emotional honesty. Her paintings are grounded in careful observation, but they are ultimately expressions of inner experience. Her works celebrate the restorative power of landscape and the extraordinary language of colour. They remind us that the finest landscape painters do more than record the world before them; they reveal the world as it is felt.
